FAQ

What is Nourish & Flourish?

Nourish & Flourish is Backpack Buddies’ online marketplace where you can shop and donate food items from the convenience and safety of your own home. Developed during COVID, Nourish & Flourish helped to replace traditional food drives in our community. When you fill a bag of food through Nourish & Flourish, you are making a donation to Backpack Buddies and that we will use to feed hungry kids across B.C..

What is Backpack Buddies?

Backpack Buddies is a registered Canadian charity based in North Vancouver, BC. Since 2012, we have been delivering weekly bags of food to kids across BC who live with food insecurity. Our bags contain meals and snacks, intended to feed a child for the weekend (and beyond) when school food programs that they depend on are closed. You can learn more about Backpack Buddies here.

Is childhood hunger an issue in my community?

One in eight households in BC have experienced food insecurity in the past year. Every day, children in these homes live with uncertainty or limited availability of the food they need to stay nourished and grow.

Will I receive a tax-receipt through Nourish & Flourish?

Yes! Every dollar you spend shopping at Nourish & Flourish is a donation to Backpack Buddies to help us purchase cases of food and crates of fresh produce for hungry kids in our communities.

Does my donation purchase exactly what I selected through Nourish & Flourish?

Your donation through Nourish & Flourish goes directly to Backpack Buddies’ budget to purchase kid-approved food to fill bags every week. Whenever possible, we will use your gift to purchase the items you have selected, however we may redirect your gift at our discretion to ensure our weekly bags are filled with a variety of products.

How do you choose the products that are in your bags of food?

Over the years, we have carefully developed our bags of food to find the perfect combination of kid-approved, nutritious food. Many of the children we serve prepare their meals by themselves and may not have access to cold storage/refrigeration and so the contents of our bags reflect these realities.

How much food goes in each child’s weekly bag of food?

Every week each child receives meals and snacks to last the weekend and beyond. Leveraging our significant buying power, each bag we pack costs $20.
